What are Damon braces and how do they work

The truth is that at first - cursory - glance you cannot tell whether a person has classic metal braces or self-ligating braces. The main difference between them lies in the different mechanisms. 

Damon braces lack elastics (ligatures) and instead have a built-in self-ligating system that holds the orthodontic wire in place. This system uses built-in clips in the brackets in which the wire can slide more freely.

This sophisticated design allows better control of the force exerted on the teeth while minimizing discomfort.

They are available in two versions: metal self-ligating braces (Damon braces) or aesthetic self-ligating braces (Damon Clear braces), which are less visible on the teeth.

Advantages and disadvantages of self-ligating braces

Disadvantages

  • They tend to be more expensive: The price of Damon self-ligating braces tends to be higher than traditional metal braces.
  • They are not so affordable: not every orthodontic practice can offer them.
  • Demanding care: as with fixed metal braces, self-ligating braces require attention to oral hygiene and avoiding certain foods.

Price The price for self-ligating braces is similar or slightly lower compared to invisible braces - depending on whether you choose Damon or Damon Clear; expect to pay 40,000-90,000 CZK.

Usually their price is higher than other types of braces, around 50 000-99 000 CZK.
Duration of treatment Self aligning braces effectively move the teeth thanks to them, so the length of treatment with them is shorter than with fixed braces, but comparably long as with invisible braces. Generally shorter because of the mechanics of the movement. Each tooth can be moved individually or in groups, which is not so easy with fixed braces.
Care and maintenance Similar to fixed braces - you need to be careful and avoid certain foods. They are not susceptible to staining because you take them out of your mouth to eat and drink. They are also very easy to maintain.

Common myths and concerns about self-ligating braces

Many people are apprehensive about wearing braces - whether because of the pain, the appearance, or the length of treatment. With the growing popularity of self-ligating damon braces, it's important to dispel some of these common myths.
