This process is completely natural. The ligaments, bone, and muscles need time to permanently adjust to the new position of the teeth. This is precisely why the retention phase is a key part of successful treatment. Without proper and long-term retention , teeth may shift, the aesthetics of the smile may deteriorate, or further correction may be necessary in the future.

A retainer is a clear, custom-made device that keeps your teeth in their new position after treatment is complete. It looks similar to the clear aligners you’re already familiar with, but it’s made of a harder, less flexible material—the difference is obvious when you hold it in your hand.

In the first three months after the braces are removed, it is ideal to wear them as often as possible—essentially just as often as the braces themselves. For the next six months, it’s enough to wear the retainers in the afternoon and at night; later, you can switch to wearing them only at night. However, if you feel that the retainer is harder to put on, go back to wearing it more frequently.

Although a retainer is very durable, it is not indestructible. Wearing it causes the teeth to wear down the retainer, which reduces its effectiveness and may prevent it from guiding the teeth into their ideal position. It can also crack if handled carelessly, or you may find it difficult to clean properly.
It is therefore best to replace your retainer every 6 months.
