Keep you new, straight smile with night braces

They will not straighten your teeth on their own, but they are still an indispensable tool in orthodontic treatment. We're talking about night braces. Why? How long do you have to wear them? And how much do they cost? We've summarized the basic overview and the most common questions about night braces in this article.

What are night braces?

Night braces, often referred to as retainers, are special orthodontic appliances that help keep your teeth in their new - correct - position after your braces are removed. You can get them after treatment with fixed braces as well as invisible braces. Sometimes they can be used as a pre-treatment.

As the name suggests, it is worn mainly in the evening and during sleep, however, a minimum of 12 hours of the day is recommended.

Why is it important to wear braces at night?

After orthodontic treatment is completed, or after braces are removed, the teeth are still relatively mobile because the surrounding tissues and bones are still adjusting to the new position of the teeth. Thus, the teeth have a natural tendency to return to their original, incorrect position. Night braces prevent this by applying gentle pressure to the teeth, ensuring the teeth are stable and supporting their correct position in the mouth

Without wearing these braces regularly, your teeth may gradually shift back, which could mean you need braces again. That's why it's important to follow your orthodontist's instructions and wear your braces at night as recommended.

How long are braces worn at night?

It is often an individual matter, but on average it is about 2 years.

Types of braces for the night

There are two main types of night braces:

  1. Removable braces (retainers):
  • Transparent foil retainers: they are made of transparent plastic and are almost invisible. They are easy to put on and take off, making them easy to maintain and wear.
  • Wire retainers (Hawley retainers): this type of retainer has an acrylic base that follows the shape of the palate and a metal wire that wraps around the front teeth. It is stronger and more durable than clear retainers and allows for minor adjustments to the position of the teeth.
  1. Fixed night braces: a thin wire that is permanently attached to the back of the teeth and is not visible from the outside. This type of retainer stays in place at all times, providing permanent support and stabilization for the teeth. It is ideal for patients who might have difficulty wearing removable braces on a regular basis.

Each type of night braces has its own advantages and is chosen based on the individual needs of the client and the recommendation of the orthodontist.

Nighttime braces: Price

  • Transparent foil retainers: the price usually ranges between CZK 1,500 and 4,000 per jaw. The price for both jaws can be around 3 000 to 8 000 CZK.
  • Wire retainers (Hawley retainers): this type is slightly more expensive, with prices ranging from CZK 3,000 to 6,000 per jaw. The total price for both jaws can reach 6,000 to 12,000 CZK.
  • Fixed retainers (lingual retainers): the price of a fixed retainer can range between 4,000 and 7,000 CZK per jaw. The price for both jaws can be around 8 000 to 14 000 CZK.

Caring for braces at night

Don't forget to take good care of these removable braces. They won't stay functional and hygienic without it.

  • Brush them regularly with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, preferably after removing them from your mouth.
  • Then clean the braces as needed using the solution from the denture cleaning tablet.
  • Keep them in a protective case.
  • Avoid hot water and aggressive cleaning agents.

Following these recommendations will ensure that your nighttime braces stay in good condition and effectively perform their role in maintaining proper tooth position.

Of course, it is important to visit your orthodontist for regular check-ups and follow his or her instructions.
