Lingual braces (internal braces): advantages and disadvantages of braces on the back of the teeth

Today, the desire for a healthy and beautiful smile motivates millions of people around the world to undergo orthodontic treatment. For many, however, there is a significant barrier that prevents them from seeking treatment: They don't like the look of conventional metal braces. Fortunately, there are plenty of (almost) invisible options available. Let's take a look at one of them: lingual braces.

What are internal braces?

In other words: braces from the back of the teeth. They have the same components as traditional metal fixed braces, but are fixed on the lingual (or lingual) side of the teeth. And because they are placed behind the teeth, they are almost invisible.

However, lingual braces are not suitable for everyone. For example, patients with a very deep overbite may have problems with their braces popping out more often.

How much do braces cost on the inside?

The price of internal braces will vary depending on:

  • the length of your treatment,
  • your place of residence or the clinic or surgery you choose,
  • your insurance company and the benefits it offers,
  • the type of apparatus you choose.

You will find out the specific amount from your orthodontist, but expect a price of around 100,000-150,000 CZK.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of lingual braces?

Benefits

  • Lingual braces are virtually invisible.
  • They effectively correct most bite problems.
  • They can be customized to enhance your comfort and maximize their effectiveness.

Disadvantages

  • Lingual braces tend to be more expensive than other types of braces.
  • They can cause considerable discomfort, especially at first.
  • They can temporarily give you a lisp.
  • Treatment with them can take longer than with regular braces.

If your main reason for choosing lingual braces is their invisibility, consider Invisalign invisible braces. Schedule a free consultation today!

Am I gonna go lingual after lingual braces?

Unfortunately, this happens quite often. Because when you speak, your tongue touches the back of your teeth - and this can cause you to make certain sounds. Because the braces are on the inside of your teeth, your speech will be affected when you first get lingual braces.

Are lingual braces more uncomfortable than other braces?

No matter what kind of braces you choose, you will probably experience some discomfort. This is because of the movement of your teeth

The braces themselves can also cause pain by coming into contact with the soft tissues inside the mouth. With lingual braces, a common site of pain is the tongue due to the placement of the braces.

For some patients, the discomfort associated with lingual braces is significant. To improve patient comfort, more and more manufacturers are making lingual braces smaller and smoother. Braces can also be customized, which has been shown to reduce discomfort.

For short-term relief from sensitive areas, you can try a topical toothache gel or a small amount of wax on any sharp edges of the braces. If the wire stings or scratches, contact your orthodontist. The wires can be trimmed so they don't hurt.
