Tips and Tricks: How to Make Life Easier with Invisible Braces?

We asked our clients what advice they would give to anyone new to treatment. In this article, we share their most common answers and recommendations.

Your journey to the smile of your dreams has begun—what’s next? Treatment with invisible aligners is as quick and comfortable as possible. However, there are ways to make the process even more pleasant.

The first step is to follow the basic rules:

  • The recommended wearing time is 22 hours a day.
  • Avoid drinking sugary and artificially colored beverages.
  • Make sure to clean your braces just as thoroughly as you clean your teeth.
  • Simply remove your braces before eating and enjoy your favorite meal.
  • Don't forget to schedule regular checkups through Virtual Care.

The First Few Days with Braces

The vast majority of our clients have told us that the beginning isn’t easy, but that they quickly got used to everything and developed their own routine with their braces.

“I definitely recommend practicing speaking as much as possible at home while wearing braces, so you can get used to it and not feel self-conscious in public,” wrote Marek, who started his braces treatment this year. “I’d also recommend sucking on ice if you experience pressure or pain after a new aligner is fitted :).”

If you feel pain or pressure, try cooling your mouth and avoid foods that are too hard or crunchy for the first few days. In extreme cases, take pain relievers. However, these are usually not necessary, as treatment with invisible braces is not typically painful. With each aligner, your teeth move only a tiny bit, so there are no major, painful shifts.

“My little trick is using a nail file to smooth out the edge of my braces that was rubbing against me a bit. It helped, and now my braces are comfortable,” Kamila recommends, adding, “I also have to admit that my braces keep me from snacking during the day, so I don’t eat as much—and most importantly, I really get to enjoy my main meals!”

Braces Care

The best way to clean your braces is to brush and rinse them in lukewarm water using a soft-bristled toothbrush. You can also use toothpaste or a little soap. However, avoid using water that is too hot, as it could warp the braces. We also do not recommend using abrasive toothpaste, as it can scratch the braces.

However, aligners don’t require special cleaning if you replace them with new ones every few days. To maintain good oral hygiene, it’s much more important to brush your teeth after every meal before putting the aligners back in. To clean the aligners, you can use aligner cleaning capsules, which are available at any drugstore.

Dental Care with Braces

“I brush my teeth all the time now. But I’ve got the hang of it—I have my own system—and most of all, I swear by my Curaproxtravel toothbrush set ,”shared our client Lucie, who has been wearing braces for two years now. “I also pack everything in a reusable, resealable plastic bag so my other things don’t get wet.”

Good oral hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy teeth. This is especially true when undergoing orthodontic treatment! We recommend visiting a dental hygienist at least once a year. Most insurance companies will cover between 500 and 5,000 CZK of the cost. You can find out whether your insurance company covers this and how much on their website.

Eating and Drinking with Braces

It’s not recommended to drink anything sugary or colored while wearing braces. Colored drinks can stain the braces. However, since you’ll be replacing them with new ones soon, you don’t need to worry too much about this. Sugary drinks are more dangerous in this regard. Sugar can get trapped behind your braces and cause problems like tooth decay. But if you don’t want to give up sweet drinks and don’t want to take your braces out, use a straw! And ideally, rinse your mouth with clean water after drinking sweet beverages.

You cannot chew gum, suck on candy, or eat any food while wearing braces. Always remove your braces before doing these things . However, you do not need to remove them when smoking traditional or electronic cigarettes.

Chewable tablets

“If you feel that the aligner isn’t fitting snugly against your teeth, use the bite rolls. Put the aligners in and bite down on the rolls in several places. Aligners that don’t fit snugly won’t work properly, which can prolong treatment,” recommends client Matouš.

Every patient receives a set of bite blocks at the start of treatment, and we’ll provide additional ones at the clinic as needed. It may seem like a small thing, but properly fitted bite blocks really do the job much more effectively and much faster.

Marie shared her thoughts on remote consultations: “Virtual Care works well for me! I don’t live in Prague or Brno, so commuting more often would be difficult for me. Even though my treatment is only for eight months, commuting would mean I’d have to find childcare or bring my young daughter along…”
