Aesthetic braces: discreet teeth straightening

Discover the magic of aesthetic braces. Less visible, more comfortable and just as effective as metal. Ideal for those who want a beautiful smile without compromise.

Braces no longer have to be a nightmare. Discover the magic of aesthetic braces!

It is perfectly understandable that many people are apprehensive about wearing braces. And maybe you're one of them. Aesthetic issues are common, especially among those who want to look their best and feel confident in both their personal and professional lives. If you too desire a beautiful and confident smile, but are put off by the idea of visible metal wires in your mouth, consider aesthetic braces. These will win you over with both their functionality and their unobtrusive appearance.

What are aesthetic braces?

Aesthetic braces are a type of fixed braces that are designed to be less noticeable than traditional metal braces. They are made from materials that blend in better with the natural appearance of the teeth - i.e. ceramic braces, sapphire braces or braces made from composite materials. They are especially popular with adult patients who wish to correct their teeth without being conspicuous.

How do aesthetic braces differ from traditional metal braces?

Aesthetic braces
Metal braces
Material

ceramics, sapphire or composite materials

Stainless steel or other metal alloys
Aesthetics
More discreet visible; they may be considered less aesthetically pleasing
Resilience
locks made of aesthetic materials are a bit more fragile and can break or chip more easily more durable, less prone to damage
Price usually more expensive (due to the material used and aesthetic properties) Slightly cheaper and more accessible option
Convenience
more often comfortable (materials tend to be less irritating to the gums and cheeks) may cause more discomfort and irritation to the oral cavity due to metal parts
Duration of treatment similar to conventional metal similar to aesthetic
Maintenance similarly susceptible to discolouration as metal similarly prone to discolouration as aesthetic

How is the treatment with aesthetic braces?

The principle of aesthetic braces is basically the same as traditional metal braces: The design applies constant pressure to the teeth, which gradually moves the teeth into the desired position.

Once you and your orthodontist have worked things out, here's how it works:

  1. The orthodontist first attaches a lock (using a special adhesive) to each tooth. These are - according to prior agreement - made of ceramic, sapphire or composite materials.
  2. An orthodontic wire made of materials such as nickel, titanium or stainless steel (because they are flexible and have shape memory capability) is then attached to the brackets. The wire is then attached to the brackets using elastic bands (ligatures).
  3. The orthodontic wire exerts a constant, gentle pressure on the teeth. This causes the teeth to move slowly but surely into the desired position
  4. During regular check-ups (usually every 4-6 weeks), the orthodontist adjusts/tightens/changes the wire to ensure optimal pressure and to continue the tooth movement process.
  5. Once you have reached the desired position of your teeth, the orthodontist will remove the braces and you will be given a removable retain er that helps keep your teeth in their new position. It often needs to be worn for several months to years (always according to your doctor's specific instructions).

Duration of treatment with aesthetic braces

The length of treatment with cosmetic braces can vary depending on the complexity of the case, your age and your cooperation.

While simple corrections such as slight straightening or correction of minor defects can take a shorter period of time (12-18 months), more complex cases can take years.

In younger patients, tooth movement may be faster due to the higher plasticity of the bone tissue. In adults, the treatment may take longer because the plasticity of the bone tissue is already worse and tooth movement is naturally slower.

However, you can always contribute to the length of your treatment. The more consistent you are in following your orthodontist's instructions, the shorter the time will be. This includes thorough hygiene as well as regular check-ups.

Hygiene during treatment with cosmetic braces

Oral hygiene is also very important during treatment with cosmetic braces. Brackets and wires can create areas where food debris is more easily trapped and plaque forms. Lack of hygiene can lead to tooth decay, gingivitis, and other problems - which you'll only find out about after your braces are removed.

Here are a few tips on how to properly care for your teeth during orthodontic treatment:

  1. Brush your teeth regularly and thoroughly. At least 3 times a day, ideally after every meal. Use a soft toothbrush (or a special brush for braces) and fluoride toothpaste. Don't forget interdental brushes, dental floss and fluoride mouthwash.
  1. See your orthodontist by appointment. Regular check-ups and professional cleaning. Regular visits are important not only for braces adjustments, but also to check hygiene and prevent problems.
  1. Avoid sticky and hard foods such as caramel, chewing gum and nuts. These can damage the locks and wires, and they also catch more easily around the braces.

Proper hygiene during treatment with braces requires really honest care. This is the only way to achieve straight teeth without stains and cavities.

For whom are aesthetic braces (un)suitable?

Aesthetic braces are suitable for everyone: adults, children, people with metal allergies and, of course, those who simply do not want to have a metal smile.

Yes, there is no age limit - even adults can get braces. In our article on adult braces, we busted 5 of the most common myths on the subject.

However, there are cases where aesthetic braces will not be suitable. These include:

  • Complex orthodontic cases
  • People at high risk of brace damage (especially active athletes)
  • People on a budget
  • Persons with high aesthetic demands and discoloration concerns

Invisalign braces also technically fall under discreet braces. While they work on a different principle than all fixed braces, they also carry aesthetic benefits. Read a separate article about this type of braces or book a free no-obligation consultation and dental visualisation
